Practical activities

Social action is an aspect of Jewish life in which everyone can participate, and many Sinai members already do.

Being involved in social action does not necessarily require high levels of formal Jewish knowledge and learning but can be a means by which people can express their own commitment to Judaism.

We encourage practical activity, or voluntary work, through a range of volunteering opportunities within Sinai Synagogue, the wider Jewish community and the community at large, including civic society.

Causes and events have included supporting asylum seekers and refugees, including a winter shelter for destitute asylum seekers; participating in Leeds Pride (LGB T* parade) and reaching out to LGB T* Jews; Macmillan coffee mornings; food bank collections; working with the wider Jewish community and other faith groups on the annual Mitzvah Day initiative (day of social action); participating with Nisa-Nashim, a Jewish/Muslim Women’s network. Members are also encouraged to share information about their own involvement in voluntary work.
